Getting Your Home Office Ready

Working from home has it's advantages.  One of those advantages is decorating your office with your own furniture, decor and personality.   Your home office can be just as complete as any other office:  fax machine, copier, file cabinets and much more.  The trick is to find the balance between functionality and your budget.

Your desk should be a decent size.  Do not get too small of a desk. You will want something with a lot of room for your computer monitor, keyboard, telephone and room to spread out your work.  It also must be sturdy enough to stand up to a lot of use.

Also, invest in a good chair.  In fact, invest in the best chair that your budget will allow.  You can get by with second hand cabinets, bookshelves, etc., but your chair will get used every day and needs to be able to support you comfortably.  Do not purchase a used office chair since chair padding breaks down over time.

Bookshelves and File cabinets are a great idea for any office.  Organization is key and you will want to keep all of your paperwork filed neatly (and often).  These items can be purchased second hand.

If your business requires storage, use your closets, garage, attic, basement, etc.  Keep the excess out of the office to stop clutter.  Keep in mind that storage space can be written off for tax purposes.

For additional work space, folding tables are excellent.  They can be stored behind a door, under a bed or in a closet when not in use.

Remember, you will be working from your home.  A well organized, functional office is a happy office and in turn a happy home.  Please make sure to equip your office so that you can be as efficient as you can.
