More and more, people's fuses seem to be getting shorter and shorter. This may be due to pressures at work, tensions of life and much more. Since there doesn't seem to be a reversal of this trend, you may encounter an increasing number of angry or irritated people in your job or work at home career. You can defuse their anger!
First and foremost, remain calm. The last thing you need to do is have them 'push your buttons'. Getting angry will inhibit your ability to reason with them. Several things you can do: Count to ten, take a deep breath, stay in the moment and remember that it is not a reflection on you but rather the situation.
Take a look at their body language. Angry people may have dilated pupils, rigid body, flaring nostrils, threatening movements like fists pounding, and others. The best thing to do if you observe this is to give the person a wide berth. Move away to ensure safety.
To calm the person down, you may try to get them to sit down.
Allow them to vent and get it out of their system. But remember you must listen to what they are saying and don't interupt. Make sure you show concern for their issues.
After they have vented, make sure to ask questions in a calm voice. Say things like 'I understand why you feel that way'. This shows that you are listening to their concerns, not that you are agreeing with them.
Try to offer a solution to the issue. Perhaps offer 2 or 3 ideas to solve the problem. If that doesn't help, ask 'What would you like me to do to help you?'.
